Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann-, TTGL, in short, Gainax's try to bring mecha-animes to the 2000s and to reform the genre into better shape. The original TV series was presented in Japan in the summer of 2007, and it immediately attracted a lot of attention to the whole extent of the Internet.
Gainax carried out a series of their own lofty goals in terms of investing in a lot of money, and cutting-edge creative forces. As Anime News Network says, with a series of doing an extraordinary number of people, each section of the circulation of people were able to invest in the best possible way. Gurren Laganns story is divided into four story lines, of which the first three states roughly that snug 70 -, 80 - and early 90's mecha series moods. The fourth part is Gainax vision of the 2000s giant mecha series, and it literally swells galactic proportions - as well as the visual brilliance.
Animation of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann represents this century's style, very imaginative and alive, but making it a bit too directed towards the younger audience to be suited for my tastes.
Characters of the series are generic enough for such a story: they have their good sides, but don't really excel at anything. Same kind of characters you can find in dozens of similar animes in my opinion: however it's a thing that the watchers may trust or get annoyed, it's all about the point of view.
Story of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann however is maybe the best part of the series. It doesn't stay on one spot very long, but takes the watcher towards new things in a very good pace, I have to admit that that is a great quality in any series. I belive that the story and general style of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is directed to the more younger audience and will most likely be good for anyone who hasn't watched much anime.
This anime is an ode to the male stubbornness and style so strong, that it transcends all boundaries of common sense. Giant robots are, after all, only a minor part to the strong and well-thought-out characters, with the development of nobodies into world-class personalities of the story.
