Magi 169: Reim and the invention of gunpowder

Recap:

At first we get a "recap" of the history of Reim empire, which is supreme ruler of the western continent and was established 730 years ago by the Emperor Remus. Under the rule of Emperor Perdinaus 211 years ago, it reached its maximum expansion. and If we exclude the Great Kouga Empire, Reim is the strongest and largest country that has ever existed.

And now Reim's soldiers are blocked by an invisible and thin protective wall made of magic.

Suddenly magicians of Magnostadt see something approaching in the air. They are airships which drop bombs on the magic wall and are very effective. We get a flashback where Reim empire invents gunpowder! Ignatius can't seem to believe that it isn't made by Lady Scheherazade.

The whole point of this is for people of Reim to achieve something themselves - without the aid of Magi.

Because of these gunpowder bombs which are now being sent flying with catapults the first barrier is already starting to crack. Scheherazade basically tells Lord Mogamett, that she believes in people and their way of inventing new things.

Aaand suddenly the first barrier is down already! People in Magnostadt are beginning to tremble and desperately seek aid from magicians: Lord Mogamett has one more joker in his pocket. He calls it "power we created" and with it Magnostadt aims to win.

Comments and Predictions

It's interesting to see how Reim is actually almost a copy of Roman empire with only slight changes done. This is by no means new observation, but something that is in my opinion heavily pointed in chapter 169. It seems that Reim didn't rely on their strongest forces yet and that's in my opinion at the same time a good thing and a bad thing. Good in a way that we have something to wait for and bad that we didn't still get to see them yet.

The whole invention of gunpowder consept is interesting: does this mean that we will be seeing actual guns in the near future of this manga? I hope not.

I'm interested to see what this "Power" of Mogamett's is, but I throw something out there: it's some kind of form of magic collected and stored for moments like these: it's output will most likely be like a huge laser which will destroy enemy forces. This is how I could see it in my mind, but of course I hope for something more original :P
